APC Sets Stage for Crucial National Convention, Reaffirms Unity and Renewed Hope Agenda
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared its readiness to host its eighth National Convention in Abuja, describing the gathering as a defining moment for party unity, leadership renewal, and alignment with national governance priorities.
Speaking at a pre-convention world press conference held at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja today, the Hon. Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris said the convention, scheduled for March 27–28, 2026, will bring together 8,453 delegates from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
“As we count down to this significant moment of the APC convention, unarguably Africa’s largest political family, the APC will hold its eighth National Convention in Abuja this weekend,” he said. “The convention hopes to bring together 8,453 delegates… for policy engagement, leadership elections and a formal transition to a new set of party executives.”
The Minister emphasized that the convention goes beyond routine political activity, describing it as “a moment of reflection, consolidation and direction-setting for the next phase of our journey.”
He noted that the theme of the convention, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” reflects both the party’s ideological roots and its forward-looking vision.
“The theme is not just a slogan but a concise statement of who we are, where we have come from, and where we intend to go,” he stated, adding that it aligns party processes with broader national governance objectives.
Tracing the APC’s evolution, the Minister said the party was founded on the principle that “diverse progressive forces could unite for national development, democratic values and inclusive governance,” stressing that this founding vision continues to guide its actions.
“Over the years, the APC has grown and adapted. We have remained a leading political force through multiple electoral cycles and complex national moments,” he said. “Through every term, the party has kept its focus on stability, progress and governance.”
He further highlighted the party’s institutional maturity, particularly in managing leadership transitions. “One of the clearest tests of a mature party is how it manages change… the APC has demonstrated its ability to manage change in a structured and orderly manner,” he said. “Clear rules, accountability and broad stakeholder participation are now embedded in our processes.”
According to him, the convention will also serve as an opportunity to showcase achievements under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and deepen the administration’s policy thrust. “The Renewed Hope Agenda remains very central. It guides policy direction, national development and engagement with Nigerians,” he said.
Reaffirming inclusivity within the party, the Minister noted: “The APC will continue to be a broad-based political platform, accommodating diverse perspectives while maintaining unity of focus. That diversity is not a weakness; it is indeed a strength.”
On logistics and preparedness, he assured that all arrangements have been concluded for a seamless exercise. “All committees have finalized their assignments and operational systems are set to ensure smooth coordination, efficiency and order. Every detail has been attended to so that the convention proceeds without avoidable disruption,” he stated.
He described the gathering as “a demonstration of the APC’s commitment to democratic practice, organizational discipline and collective decision-making,” adding that it reflects the party’s maturity as a political institution.
Reiterating confidence in the process, the Minister said: “We assure all Nigerians and indeed the entire world that this convention will meet the high standards expected of a responsible and mature political institution.”
He also paid tribute to President Tinubu’s leadership and contributions to the party’s growth. “We remain immensely grateful to our leader… for his indelible contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and his vital role in the founding and growth of the APC,” he said, commending his efforts in “fortifying our big political tent” and providing “bold, democratic and progressive direction.”
Declaring the party’s readiness, the Minister concluded: “This is the face of a party that is ready to lead and engage constructively, both at home and abroad… the APC is ready.”
