Umahi Mourns Bishop Nworie, Describes Passing as ‘Monumental Loss’ to Church and Nation

The Minister of Works, Favid Nwaze Umahi  has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Peter Nworie Chukwyu describing his passing as a monumental loss to both the Church and the Nigerian nation.

 

The condolence message was contained in a statement personally signed by the Minister.

 

In the statement, Umahi said he received news of the bishop’s death with “profound grief and a heavy heart,” noting that the late cleric’s demise marks the end of an era defined by spiritual devotion, moral leadership, and selfless service.

 

“The departure of Bishop Chukwu marks the end of an era characterized by selfless service, deep spirituality, and an uncommon dedication to the work of God,” he said.

 

The Minister described the late bishop as a spiritual father, moral compass, and symbol of discipline, whose influence extended beyond the Church into the wider society.

 

“He was not only a spiritual father to his flock but also a moral compass to society, an embodiment of discipline, and sacrificial leadership,” Umahi stated.

 

He further highlighted the bishop’s pastoral impact, noting his ability to connect with people across all walks of life with compassion and wisdom.

 

“As a teacher of the Word and a shepherd of souls, he distinguished himself through calm wisdom, pastoral care, and his ability to reach both the high and the low with equal compassion,” he added.

 

Umahi lamented that the bishop’s death comes at a time when moral clarity and spiritual guidance are greatly needed, stressing that his passing leaves a significant void.

 

“At a time when moral clarity and spiritual guidance are most needed in our society, his passing leaves a significant void,” he said, adding that the late cleric’s legacy would continue to inspire generations.

 

On behalf of his family and the Federal Ministry of Works, the Minister extended condolences to the Catholic faithful, clergy, and the entire Catholic Diocese of Abakalike, as well as the immediate and extended family of the deceased.

 

He also prayed for the repose of the bishop’s soul and for strength for all those mourning the loss.

 

“I pray that the Almighty God, whom he served, will grant his gentle soul eternal rest… and grant all who mourn him the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” Umahi said.
