President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians and members of the armed forces that the country will ultimately overcome insecurity, declaring that the sacrifices of military personnel defending the nation will never be forgotten or wasted.
The President gave the assurance on Friday during an interfaith breaking of fast with members of the Armed Forces at the Presidential Villa in Abija where he commended officers and soldiers for their bravery and dedication in confronting banditry, terrorism and other security threats across the country.
Addressing the servicemen and women, Tinubu according to a State House press release e-signed by his Special Adviser (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga acknowledged the personal sacrifices made by troops who spend long periods away from their families while serving on the frontlines.
“I have listened to the Chief of Army Staff on my recent approvals to the Nigerian Armed Forces. My duty is to thank all of you on behalf of a grateful nation, knowing fully well that many times you are without your families and that you stay away from them,” the President said.
He praised their courage and professionalism in the fight against criminal elements threatening Nigeria’s peace and stability.
“I commend your courage, sacrifice and professionalism as you put your lives on the line in defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty and the safety of its citizens,” he added.
The President noted that the efforts of the military have significantly weakened terrorist and bandit groups operating in several parts of the country. He assured the troops that his administration would continue to invest in modern equipment, intelligence gathering and improved logistics to boost their operational effectiveness.
Tinubu also expressed optimism about the country’s economic direction, thanking Nigerians for their patience amid ongoing economic reforms.
“I am happy to inform you that your sacrifices and that of fellow citizens are not in vain. We are now out of the dark tunnel,” he said.
The President further extended condolences to the government and people of Borno Staye over a recent terrorist attack in the state, expressing sympathy for victims and communities affected by the violence.
Earlier, the Chief of Defence Staff, Oluwafemi Oluyde represented by the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu commended the President for several approvals aimed at improving the welfare and operational capacity of the Armed Forces.
Shaibu said the approvals include the upward review of salaries and allowances for military personnel, particularly members of the Brigade of Guards, as well as improved procurement of equipment and provision of decent accommodation for troops.
“These laudable approvals will go a long way in enhancing our operational efficiency, and I assure you that they are well received by all members of the armed forces,” he said.
He added that the interfaith breaking of fast offered a unique opportunity for military personnel of different faiths to renew their commitment to national service and unity in defence of Nigeria.
