In a significant intervention aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to advanced diagnostic services, the NNPC Foundation has donated and commissioned a state-of-the-art 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Kano State.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by NNPC Limited and signed by Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, on June 5, 2026.

The donation, facilitated through the NNPC Foundation—the corporate social responsibility arm of NNPC Limited—is expected to transform diagnostic and treatment capabilities at the hospital, particularly in the management of orthopaedic, neurological, trauma, musculoskeletal and gynaecological conditions.

Prior to the intervention, patients requiring advanced MRI diagnostic services often faced the burden of travelling long distances, prolonged waiting periods, and delays in treatment due to limited access and the high cost of such services.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony at the hospital in Kano, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, represented by the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, said the initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and strengthening medical infrastructure nationwide.

“At NNPC Limited, we are intentional about ensuring that our social investments are impactful, sustainable, and beneficial to the communities we serve. Through the NNPC Foundation, we will continue to implement interventions that create measurable social value across Nigeria,” she stated.

According to her, the MRI donation comes at a critical time when Nigeria’s healthcare sector continues to grapple with infrastructure deficits, equipment shortages, and increasing demand for specialized medical services.

Also speaking at the event, the Executive Vice President, Business Services, NNPC Limited, Mrs. Sophia Mbakwe, represented by the Executive Director, Programme Management, NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Rose Okonkwo, said the national oil company remains committed to improving the lives of Nigerians beyond its core energy business.

“Today’s event is a testament to our steadfast commitment to deliver measurable impacts and scalable sustainable interventions to communities across Nigeria, inclusively targeting underserved and vulnerable members of society,” she said.

She added that the MRI facility would significantly improve healthcare delivery not only for residents of Kano State but also for patients across the North-West region and other parts of the country who depend on the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, for specialized medical care.

“By this intervention, NNPC Limited aims to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve the quality of life of the people of Kano State, the North-West geopolitical zone, and all Nigerians who depend on this hospital for specialized treatment,” Okonkwo noted.

Representing the Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, commended NNPC Foundation for what he described as a landmark contribution to healthcare development in the state.

He said the installation of the MRI machine would enhance early diagnosis, improve treatment outcomes, and expand access to quality healthcare services for patients across the region.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Dr. Isa Nurudeen, expressed profound appreciation to NNPC Limited for the intervention, describing the donation as transformative.

According to him, the facility will significantly strengthen the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities, improve patient care, and reduce the burden on patients who previously had to seek MRI services elsewhere.

The commissioning ceremony attracted representatives of NNPC Limited, management and staff of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, government officials, healthcare professionals, community leaders, and other stakeholders.

The donation is part of NNPC Foundation’s broader efforts to support critical sectors of the economy through strategic social investments aimed at improving healthcare, education, environmental sustainability, and economic empowerment across Nigeria.
