Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire Deepen Diplomatic Ties as Ambassador Nwaobiala Presents Credentials to President Ouattara

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire – Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, regional integration, and economic cooperation following the formal presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s new Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Ezenwa Chukwuemeka Nwaobiala, to Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara.

The development marks the official commencement of Ambassador Nwaobiala’s diplomatic assignment in Côte d’Ivoire and signals a renewed drive to deepen cooperation between two of West Africa’s most influential nations.

According to a press release issued by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson of the Ministry, the credential presentation ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan on June 18, 2026, where the Nigerian envoy formally assumed his ambassadorial responsibilities following his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Nwaobiala conveyed President Tinubu’s goodwill message to President Ouattara and the people of Côte d’Ivoire, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to advancing the longstanding friendship and strategic partnership between both countries.

He emphasized Nigeria’s determination to build on existing diplomatic and economic ties while exploring new avenues of cooperation that would benefit citizens of both nations.

President Ouattara, in his remarks, welcomed the Nigerian ambassador and reaffirmed the importance of the cordial relationship between Abuja and Abidjan.

The Ivorian leader expressed readiness to work closely with Ambassador Nwaobiala in deepening bilateral engagement and promoting cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

“We are committed to strengthening the cordial relations between Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria and to working together in advancing regional integration and economic development,” President Ouattara said.

The ceremony highlighted the enduring partnership between Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire and underscored their shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity across West Africa.

Speaking later at a reception organised in his honour by members of the Nigerian community in Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Nwaobiala described the relationship between both countries as one rooted in history, shared aspirations, and a common vision for African progress.

“Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire are bound not only by geography but by history, shared aspirations and an unwavering commitment to the ideals of African unity and prosperity,” he said.

The ambassador expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to discharge his responsibilities with dedication and a strong sense of duty.

“I will undertake this responsibility with humility, a sense of duty and firm resolve to advance the enduring interests of Nigeria while strengthening the bonds of friendship and partnership between our two brotherly nations,” Nwaobiala stated.

He further assured both Nigerian and Ivorian stakeholders of his commitment to fostering greater understanding, mutual respect, and productive collaboration, while advocating stronger international partnerships as a pathway to global peace and development.

“Nations around the world should continue to build bridges and partnerships rather than walls and divisions,” the envoy added.

Diplomatic observers say the ambassador’s formal assumption of office comes at a critical time as Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire seek to expand cooperation in trade, investment, security, and regional development under the framework of the Economic Community of West African States.

The credential presentation is widely seen as another step toward consolidating the strong relationship between the two West African nations and advancing collective efforts aimed at fostering economic growth, peace, and stability across the sub-region.
