Spread the love

Generosity is a quality that involves unselfishness and willingness to give or to share with someone. It can be expressed as giving time, money, food or showing kindness to people in need. We also understand generosity as freedom from meanness or smallness of mind or character. Biblically, we are told to be generous by sharing what we have with others as seen in Heb. 13: 16 “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased”.

The generosity of God is seen in Gen 1: 1; 26: 31, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth …” But not just for himself, God generously entrusted his glorious creations to the care of the human being He had created in His image and for His glory. But God did not stop at life and breath, He provided for man’s sustainability and survival. He made the seas, the mountains and the rivers. He made the flowers, edible plants, birds, and stars too numerous to count. Every good thing a person will need to enjoy in life has been given by God as a gift James 1: 17: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

When God had created a perfect human habitant, He created Adam in His image and likeness; and brought out Eve out of the man and gave them to each other in marriage for procreation. The Bible says that God saw that it wasn’t good for a man to be alone (Gen. 2: 17), so He made them two. He also gave them the gift of His presence. Adam and Eve knew Him so well that they recognized the sound of His feet when He walked in the Garden (Gen. 3: 8).

The Psalmist says, “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moons and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Psalm 8: 3 – 4. God is not like human, who might be generous one day and another day not. God’s generosity is enduring; it is the outflow of His love and goodness.

Prayer:

My father and my God, deliver me from meanness of mind and character; and grant me the grace not to withhold good from others.
