DAILY HOPE DEVOTIONAL: JULY 1 LESSONS FROM PARABLE OF THE PRODIGAL SON (1) SCRIPTURE: LUKE 15: 11 – 14
The Parable of the Prodigal Son, like other parables taught by Jesus, has many angles to take and many lessons as could be led by the Holy Spirit. The most common lesson of the parable is on evangelical lesson; as it is believed to favour repentance of sin to become a Christian. However, the Daily Hope Devotional will be focusing on “Destiny Renewal Lessons” as contained in this wonderful story. As contained in Jesus’ story of the prodigal son, the young boy could be taken as one born with silver spoon in his mouth. He was born into a family that was rich and wealthy. With this, this devotional feels the young boy was born into glorious destiny. The destiny talk about here is fortune by definition. Ordinarily, this young man was not supposed to suffer lacks because his father had a blessed home and servants.
The parable had it that the young boy accosted the father, one day, to give him what was his will in the family because he had nothing to do with the family again. He told his father: “Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me” (Luke 15: 12). He felt he could fair for himself. He seemed being tied of the community he was born into, therefore, going out to live on his strength and wisdom became the best option. He forced his father to share his wills between him and the elder brother. His father, though not happy with the son’s decision, gave the son what belonged to him and allowed him depart to an unknown nation. The Bible says: “So he (the father) divided to them his livelihood” (Luke 15: 12). Getting out of his community, he would soon squander his money and properties on wayward boys and girls. Hear the Bible: “And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together; journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living” (Luke 15: 13 – 14). This was what earned him the name “prodigal son” meaning a son who spends money in recklessly and extravagant ways.
In the context of the parable, this young man ruined his destiny by working out of the family when it was not yet proper. Under this ruining of destiny, the devotional will point out eight ways the boy ruined his destiny. The lessons pointed out here will tell readers that whoever practices what the prodigal son did will waste his or her destiny. The parable ended beautifully as the young boy would come back to his father after a long time of period. He embarked on five steps to renew his destiny here. He was fortunate to renew his destiny through these five steps. Lessons here will show readers how any person can renew his/her destiny following the steps of the Prodigal Son. Please keep dates with us till this lengthy discussion on the parable of the Prodigal Son will be exhausted.
