Decrying the neglect of waterways transport  compared to road and air transport, Hon Ojema Ojotu, highlights the cost effective of investing in waterways.

“If you look at what is happening, road and air transport are given significant attention by the government.

“As lawmakers, we are saying that the same level of priority should be given to water transportation. Those of us who have access to the President should let him know, water transportation must also receive priority attention.

“In less than a year, a well-developed water transportation system will help decongest our roads. It is also a safer and cheaper means of transportation,” he said.

Ojotu who commended legislature from the both chambers for speaking favorably about the sector further noted that improving water transport infrastructure would reduce pressure on the country’s overburdened road network and provide a safer and more affordable alternative for commuters and goods transportation.

Earlier, lawmakers at the session also advocated for increased funding to address flooding, insecurity and improve inland waterways across the country stressing that proper investment in water transport infrastructure could boost economic activities, enhance safety, and mitigate the impact of climate-related disasters.
