The Benue State Police Command has successfully rescued 14 kidnapped passengers following a brutal attack on a Benue Links transport bus in Otukpo, while confirming the tragic death of the driver and two others

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Anene Sewuese Catherine, the attack occurred on April 3, 2025, at around 8:30 PM when a gang of armed kidnappers ambushed a Toyota Hiace bus traveling from Makurdi to Otukpo. The assailants opened fire on the driver and a front-seat passenger, forcing the vehicle to stop abruptly.

Upon receiving distress calls, police operatives and the Benue State Civil Protection Guard swiftly mobilized to the scene. They discovered the driver and passenger critically injured inside the vehicle. Both were rushed to the hospital but were later confirmed dead.

Determined to rescue the abducted passengers, security forces launched an immediate search operation in the surrounding forest. On April 4, 2025, at around 3:00 PM, they encountered the kidnappers, engaging them in a fierce gun battle. The superior firepower of the security team forced the criminals to flee, abandoning their captives.

Sadly, two of the victims sustained machete wounds before being rescued. The 14 freed hostages were taken to the hospital, where one of them later succumbed to injuries. The remaining survivors are currently receiving medical care.

Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Steve H. Yabanet, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. He urged residents of Otukpo to be vigilant and report anyone with gunshot wounds, as several kidnappers sustained injuries during the shootout.
