By Abayomi Odunowo.
In an increasingly interconnected world, the line between domestic sovereignty and external influence has grown alarmingly thin. This reality is starkly captured in the warning by Primate Elijah Ayodele, who posits that the United States poses a serious threat to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second term. Whether one perceives this caution as spiritual insight or geopolitical foresight, it brings to light a fundamental truth: foreign influence in Nigerian affairs is not only real but often underestimated. The implications of Ayodele’s warning are profound; Nigeria must strategically prepare not just politically, but diplomatically, economically, and in terms of national sovereignty.
Primate Ayodele’s warning highlights several critical areas of concern:
1. U.S. Interference: He posits that the U.S. is the most significant external threat to Tinubu’s political future, suggesting that American interests may be keenly aligned against his second term.
2. Covert Operations: The implications of covert geopolitical interference cannot be overlooked. Possible international campaigns may be orchestrating disinformation and rallying support for opposition forces, undermining Tinubu’s authority and destabilizing the political landscape.
3. Misplaced Focus: Ayodele warns against Tinubu’s potential focus on domestic opposition, urging him to recognize and counteract the global power plays that could undermine his administration.
4. Prophetic Consequences: The warning carries a gravity, suggesting “terrible consequences” if these threats continue to be ignored. This is not merely a call to arms but a summons for introspection and preparedness as Nigeria stands at a crossroads.
If Ayodele’s warning rings true, President Tinubu must take decisive action to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty. Here are realizable solutions to address these multifaceted threats:
1. Activate a Strategic Foreign Intelligence Unit.
The establishment of a dedicated Presidential Foreign Intelligence Coordination Desk under the National Security Adviser (NSA) or the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) can monitor foreign influences in political processes. Regular threat assessments from Nigeria’s embassies in key global capitals, combined with enhanced cybersecurity measures against disinformation strategies, will bolster Nigeria’s ability to respond effectively.
2. Build a Strategic Diplomatic Shield.
Deepening ties with non-aligned powers such as India, China, Russia, and Brazil can provide Nigeria with a balanced diplomatic approach. A quiet channel of communication with the U.S. through trusted envoys will help clarify misunderstandings while fostering a mutual respect essential for national stability. Nigeria should also revisit and strengthen its role in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to safeguard its interests.
3. Mobilize Pan-African Solidarity
Uniting with like-minded African leaders can create a collective front against foreign electoral manipulation. Initiatives like the Pan-African Political Integrity Forum can strengthen regional solidarity, utilizing platforms like ECOWAS and the African Union (AU) to codify safeguards that protect electoral integrity within the continent.
4. Control the Strategic National Narrative.
Establishing a Narrative Protection and Strategic Communications Unit within the presidency could counter foreign media campaigns that seek to undermine Tinubu’s administration. By promoting a unified message of Nigerian sovereignty and progress, while empowering diaspora leaders as narrative defenders, Nigeria can cultivate a more favorable international perception.
5. Boost Economic Sovereignty.
Lessening dependence on Western financial mechanisms is paramount. By promoting economic diversification and Naira stability policies, Nigeria can mitigate the impact of foreign currency manipulation. Partnerships with development banks outside the influence of U.S. interests, such as the BRICS Bank, will also strengthen economic resilience.
6. Reorganize Campaign Strategy with a Global Lens (For 2027).
Developing a foreign affairs and diaspora engagement arm will be crucial for future electoral campaigns. Scenario planning for potential external shocks and establishing a robust legal strategy to resist foreign-driven delegitimization will ensure Tinubu’s administration remains resilient to external pressures.
Even when viewed metaphorically, Primate Ayodele’s warning emphasizes the necessity for vigilance amid political, spiritual, and geopolitical currents. History has taught us that powerful nations often orchestrate the fates of developing countries. As President Tinubu navigates the complexities of governance, he must look beyond local politics. Proactive measures to secure Nigeria’s political sovereignty from foreign influence are not merely advisable; they are imperative. The time to act is now; Nigeria’s future rests on Tinubu’s willingness to respond decisively to both domestic and international challenges. If he can rise to this occasion, the nation will not only safeguard its sovereignty but also pave the way for enduring stability and progress.
