Conference of State Legislatures Pledge Support for National Assembly’s Legislative Agenda, Sues for Strategic Alignment Toward Improving Lives of Nigerians

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has pledged its support for the National Assembly’s Legislative Agenda, emphasizing the need for strategic alignment, collaboration and partnership between federal and state lawmakers to drive national transformation.

Argued that  National Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda of the House of Representatives is historical and presents a unique platform for reflection, engagement, and strategic alignment—not only for federal lawmakers but also for those of us at the sub-national level to strengthen democratic governance and improve the lives of the Nigerian people.

Ogundoyin, made the pledge in a goodwill message at the Inaugural National Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda of the 10th  House of Representatives held today at Transcorp Hilton Toda Monday which had top government officials and organisations at the federal and state levels in attendance. The private sector and the diplomatic corps were also represented.

“We recognize that while the House of Representatives sets the legislative agenda for the Federal Legislature, the effective translation of many of these priorities into meaningful national impact often requires collaboration and partnership with State Houses of Assembly,” Ogundoyin said.

Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, for his visionary leadership in convening the Dialogue, describing it as a “bold and timely step toward consolidating legislative effectiveness, transparency, and cooperation.”

Ogundoyin emphasized the need for lawmakers to address the root causes of youth unemployment and economic despair, and urged collaboration on initiatives such as youth empowerment, support for MSMEs, and promoting agricultural development and food security.

On security, Ogundoyin advocated for the establishment of State Police, saying it would enable more localized and effective security measures tailored to specific regional needs.

“The synergy between the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly is paramount in translating legislative agendas into tangible outcomes for Nigerians,” Ogundoyin said.

He praised the leadership of the House of Representatives for its progressive and inclusive approach, and assured the Conference’s support in making legislative efforts impactful at the sub-national level.

“We must act not just as representatives of our constituencies, but as true patriots committed to the unity, security, and prosperity of our beloved country,” Ogundoyin said.
