DAILY HOPE DEVOTIONAL: JUNE 26 Topic: GOD’S LOVE AND MERCY (2) Scriptures: Romans 12: 9 – 21; Matthew 18: 12 – 35
If you need to forgive someone, recall your own weaknesses and failings. Your own need for forgiveness may help you to forgive that person. Forgiveness is a choice, you can choose to hold on to your hurt, but it will leave you with only bitterness and anger. Forgiving frees you as much as the person who is forgiven. If you need to be forgiven by someone, a spirit of brokenness and humility is necessary before you can seek that forgiveness. Allow the Holy Spirit to soften your heart.
Jesus told us a parable about the unmerciful servant in the scripture we read, the servant who was forgiven a huge debt, the debt he could never hope to repay. Yet, despite the mercy shown to him by his master; he refused to forgive another servant of a debt so minute compared to the one he was forgiven of. How will you respond to those who need mercy from you? God requires that you extend justice, mercy, and compassion to others (Zech. 7: 9 – 13). The opposite of mercy is judgment. When you are judgmental or refuse to show mercy, just like the unmerciful servant, you will face judgment. It is worthy to know that judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful (James 2: 13); “mercy triumph over judgment”.
When you realize the extent of God’s mercy towards you, your heart will overflow with love and gratitude toward Him. The greater the debt canceled, the greater the love and gratitude in response (Luke 7: 41 – 43). If you are having problem in forgiving others, perhaps you are yet to discover the depth of God’s mercy towards you. Honestly, examine your heart to see if you are the unmerciful servant denying others the mercy they need so much? Psalm 51: 1 should be your prayers.
PRAYER POINTS:
1) Open my eyes to see the depths of your love and mercy towards me.
2) Grace and mercy were withdrawn from the unmerciful servant. O, God, let my life attract your mercy and not judgment.
CONFESSION:
I will love sincerely.
I will hate what is evil.
I will cling to what is good.
