President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the occasion of his 89th birthday, describing the elder statesman as a towering figure whose influence has shaped Nigeria, Africa, and the global community.
In a congratulatory message contained in a State House press release e-signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu rejoiced with Chief Obasanjo as he marked his birthday on March 5, saluting his courage, sacrifices, and enduring commitment to national unity and development.
The President reflected on Obasanjo’s historic leadership roles first as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, when he handed over power to a civilian government, and later as the country’s first civilian president in the Fourth Republic from 1999 to 2007.
Tinubu also highlighted Obasanjo’s frontline role during the civil war in preserving Nigeria’s unity, as well as his time in prison for speaking out against tyranny, noting that such experiences underscore his steadfast dedication to democratic ideals and national progress.
According to the President, Obasanjo’s contributions extend beyond public office, citing his books and consistent interventions in national and continental affairs as evidence of his deep patriotism and commitment to Africa’s political and economic advancement.
As the former leader clocks 89, Tinubu prayed for continued good health, strength, and wisdom for him, expressing hope that he will remain a guiding voice in service to the nation and humanity.
