A storm of condemnation is brewing in Rivers State following allegations that the Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Eugene Cheta Epelle, ordered the assault of a young woman after she shared photos and videos highlighting the deplorable condition of a public secondary school in the area.

The victim, Winnie Miller, alleged that she was attacked on Sunday after posting footage of what she described as a severely dilapidated secondary school in Ahoada West. According to her account, the council chairman confronted her family at their residence over the social media post, accusing her of attempting to tarnish his image.

“The Chairman of Ahoada West LGA, Eugene Cheta Epelle, came to my house on Sunday and confronted my mother, telling her that her daughter wants to damage his image on social media because of the video I posted showing the dilapidated secondary school in Ahoada West,” Miller said. “He said I had insulted his office and then instructed people to beat me right in front of him. If not for the intervention of people around, they would have succeeded in killing me.”

The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents and civil society advocates, who say the alleged attack reflects a disturbing pattern of administrative and political intimidation against citizens who speak out on governance issues.

Observers note that social media has increasingly become a platform for citizens to document infrastructure decay and demand accountability from public office holders. However, cases of alleged reprisals have raised fears about shrinking civic space and the safety of whistleblowers at the grassroots level.

As of press time, there was no official statement from the Ahoada West Local Government Council addressing the allegations. Efforts to reach Chairman Epelle for comments were unsuccessful.

Human rights advocates in Rivers State have called for an independent investigation into the matter, urging law enforcement authorities to ensure the safety of the victim and uphold her constitutional right to freedom of expression.

The alleged assault has also reignited debate about the state of public education infrastructure in several rural communities across Rivers State, with stakeholders demanding urgent government intervention to rehabilitate decaying school facilities.

Residents say beyond the controversy, the core issue remains the condition of the secondary school that triggered the incident — a symbol, they argue, of the urgent need for transparent governance rather than violent suppression of dissent.

As the story continues to unfold, many are watching closely to see whether authorities will act decisively to protect citizens’ rights and reinforce the principle that public office holders are accountable to the people they serve.
