By Alex Odeh, Pan Afric Reporters
The pan Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for bringing to a halt the nefarious activities of suspected Fulani herdsmen in the Southeast.
A press statement issued and signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General and Chief Thompson Ohia National Spokesman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said the decline of suspected herdsmen attacks in the Southeast has vindicated the Ohanaeze’s assertion that the herdsmen were allegedly supported and funded by the now-deceased former President Muhammadu Buhari’
According to Ohanaeze, the efforts of the federal government and the Southeast Governors must be appreciated in addressing security challenges in the Southeast, recalling that over 2,960 innocent lives and countless injuries were recorded during the protracted and grim era of terror unleashed by Fulani herdsmen under President Muhammadu Buhari.
The statement reads: “The surprising decline in the nefarious activities of suspected Fulani herdsmen, who for years wreaked havoc upon our lands, devastated agricultural resources, commandeered vast tracts of our forests, and forced the displacement of countless communities, stands out as a miraculous event deserving of acknowledgment and analysis.
“It is with a sense of vindication that we reaffirm our longstanding assertion that these militant groups were, in fact, allegedly supported and funded by the now-deceased former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, specifically with the ulterior motive of destabilizing Southern Nigeria — particularly the Southeast region.
“This assertion, held by many in our communities, has now gained further credence in light of recent observations regarding the marked reduction in the menacing presence and actions of these groups subsequent to the demise of Buhari.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo must also take this opportunity to recognize the collaborative efforts made by the current Federal Government alongside the Southeast Governors. Their initiatives in addressing the severe insecurity challenges that plagued our region — resulting in the tragic loss of over 2,960 innocent lives and countless injuries during the protracted and grim era of terror unleashed by Fulani herdsmen — warrant our appreciation. We express our heartfelt gratitude to God Almighty and our ancestors for the cessation of this harrowing reign of terror.
“The troubling Fulanization agenda promoted during Buhari’s tenure significantly eroded the trust of the Igbo people in the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government from 2015 to 2023. These years were fraught with considerable hardship for our people. However, the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken monumental steps to restore that trust and confidence. We have witnessed tangible improvements in security across the region, allowing the Igbo populace to rest easier, a privilege that had been denied us for far too long.
“In light of these positive developments, Ohanaeze Ndigbo extends its heartfelt birthday wishes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he commemorates his 74th birthday anniversary. We remain profoundly indebted to him for his unwavering commitment to transforming the infrastructure and security landscape of the Southeast, thereby fostering a safer and more hospitable environment for all.
“As we reflect on these significant changes, let us move forward with renewed hope, commitment, and a unified spirit. We will continue to advocate for the rights and security of the Igbo people and strive towards a brighter future for our communities”, they concluded.
