Police Vow Justice as Officer Dies in Imo Checkpoint Crash

The Nigeria Police Force has launched a full-scale investigation into a fatal road incident that claimed the life of one of its officers during routine duty in Imo State, pledging that justice will be served.
Inspector Habila Mangai died on April 18, 2026, after he was struck by a Mack truck while conducting a lawful stop-and-search operation along the Owerri–Okigwe Road at Amaraku in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by Anthony Okon Placid, the late officer, attached to the Isiala Mbano Division, was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The statement disclosed that the driver of the truck, identified as Chisom Ajah, alongside the vehicle, has been taken into custody and handed over to the State Motor Traffic Department in Owerri for detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
Reacting to the development, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the family, colleagues, and the Imo State Police Command.
“The sacrifice of the deceased officer will not be in vain. We are committed to ensuring that justice is served in accordance with the law,” the IGP assured.
The Force emphasized that a thorough and transparent investigation has been instituted to ascertain the full details of the incident and ensure accountability where necessary.
“A comprehensive investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate घटना,” the statement noted.
The Police also used the opportunity to call on motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly around police checkpoints and operational duty posts.
“We urge all road users to obey traffic regulations and maintain due care to prevent avoidable tragedies,” the Force added.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty, as authorities continue efforts to improve operational safety and public compliance with traffic laws.
