IGP Pushes Global Alliance as Nigeria Intensifies War on Cybercrime

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for stronger inter-agency and international collaboration to effectively combat cybercrime, warning that the evolving digital threat landscape requires coordinated responses beyond national borders.
The charge was conveyed during a familiarisation visit by the Joint Case Team on Cybercrime to the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja, where stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to a unified approach in tackling cyber-related offences.
According to a statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by Akaninyene Ezima, Director of the NPF National Cybercrime Centre, the IGP emphasised the need for synergy among security and justice institutions to strengthen enforcement and prosecution.
Receiving the delegation, Ezima highlighted the importance of intelligence sharing and joint operations in addressing the increasing sophistication of cybercriminal networks.
The Joint Case Team on Cybercrime—comprising representatives from the Office of the National Security Adviser, Federal Ministry of Justice, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit, and the police—also pledged closer cooperation.
Speaking during the visit, the team leader, Jamila Akaaga Ade, reaffirmed the group’s readiness to support ongoing efforts.
“We are committed to working closely with the NPF-NCCC to combat cybercrime both locally and internationally,” she said.
She noted that the team’s mandate includes investigating cybercrime cases across agencies and leveraging international legal frameworks to ensure swift prosecution of offenders.
Security experts at the meeting stressed that cybercrime has become increasingly transnational, requiring Nigeria to deepen partnerships, strengthen legal frameworks, and enhance institutional capacity to safeguard its digital ecosystem.
