The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and three other officers over the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, in Efurun, Delta State, in a case that has sparked widespread outrage over police conduct and accountability.
Addressing journalists today at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, police authorities said the officers were found culpable of professional misconduct, abuse of office, and the unlawful killing of the suspect, who had already been apprehended by civilians before police arrived at the scene.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, who briefed journalists on the directive of the Inspector General of Police, detailed how the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after the deceased received a parcel from a friend in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
“The parcel, intended for delivery to Sapele, was intercepted and searched by concerned citizens, who discovered a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of live ammunition concealed inside.”
He reveals that civilians carried out a citizen’s arrest and handed Ogidi over to ASP Nuhu and his team upon their arrival. However, in what authorities described as a clear violation of operational procedures, the officer allegedly shot and killed the unarmed suspect.
“No criminal suspicion, however grave, justifies extrajudicial action. Every suspect is entitled to due process under the law,” the police stated.”
Following an internal investigation led by the Force Monitoring Unit, ASP Nuhu and three members of his team were arrested and subjected to disciplinary procedures, which have now been concluded. He said.
“The Police Service Commission has reviewed and ratified the recommendation for their dismissal. Their removal from service takes immediate effect,” he added.
The case has since been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution, with the police pledging full cooperation to ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, he disclosed that the driver who delivered the parcel from Yenagoa, as well as two vigilantee members connected to the incident, remain at large but tactical teams have been deployed to track and apprehend the suspects. He said.
The police authority also confirmed that the remains of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary, with an autopsy to be conducted as part of the evidence in the prosecution.
Reassuring the public and the victim’s family, the force emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability.
“No rank, no position, and no circumstance will place any officer above the law,” he stressed.
The police extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged Nigerians to remain calm while investigations and prosecution proceed.
