The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and other electricity sector stakeholders have coordinated plans for a proposed outage and load diversion on the Kumbotso–Dan Agundi 132kV transmission line in Kano to facilitate the elongation of Towers 27 and 28.

The TCN Kano Region disclosed this in a statement issued on October 13, 2026, following a coordination meeting held on October 5 at the Regional Conference Room in Kano. The meeting brought together representatives of NISO, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), project contractors and the Kano State Ministry of Works.

The meeting was chaired by the General Manager, Transmission, Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, who expressed confidence in the contractors’ competence but stressed the need for thorough technical assessments before work begins.

He emphasised that all proposed connections and switching arrangements must be carefully evaluated to guarantee operational safety and maintain the reliability of the transmission network.

Speaking at the meeting, NISO Regional Operations Coordinator, Engr. Kunle Egbedinni, called for strict compliance with the Grid Code, particularly the requirement that planned outage applications be submitted at least 14 days in advance for approval.

The Head of Operations and Maintenance at KEDCO, Engr. Sabiu Haruna, proposed diverting electricity supply currently served by the Dan Agundi 132kV Substation to alternative substations, including Dakata 132kV, Tamburawa 132kV, Rimin Zakara 330kV, Kumbotso 330kV and Wudil 132kV.

The proposed diversion is expected to take place within a two-day outage window, subject to technical assessments and the necessary operational arrangements.

During the deliberations, participants reviewed the capacity of the network and the available alternatives for maintaining electricity supply during the planned works. They observed that the Hadejia 132kV Substation could not accommodate the entire 60-megawatt load earmarked for diversion.

Consequently, stakeholders assessed alternative supply arrangements involving the Tamburawa, Rimin Zakara and Dakata substations, while underscoring the importance of protecting personnel, equipment and the stability of the electricity network.

The meeting ended with participants pledging stronger inter-agency coordination, strict regulatory compliance and timely execution of the project.

The tower elongation project is intended to facilitate the required transmission line works, while the coordinated outage and load diversion arrangements are aimed at managing operational risks and minimising disruption to electricity supply during implementation.
