The Federal Government has commenced construction of a 120-megavolt-ampere (MVA) transmission substation in Mashi, Katsina State, in a move aimed at strengthening electricity supply, supporting local businesses and improving household welfare, with completion scheduled for March 31, 2027.
The Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this on Friday, October 23, 2026, in his address at the groundbreaking ceremony for the 2 × 60 MVA, 132/33 kV Mashi Transmission Substation. He said the project, being implemented through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), would expand the network’s capacity to deliver available electricity within Katsina State and neighbouring areas.
Tegbe explained that the facility would provide 120 MVA of transformation capacity, equivalent to approximately 96 megawatts, when completed. He said the investment was intended to support economic activities and improve the quality of life of residents, including farmers, traders, artisans and households.
“Today, we break ground in Mashi with a clear purpose: to build electricity infrastructure that supports livelihoods and gives this community greater room to grow,” the minister said.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as a sustained commitment to reforming the power sector and advancing national development through the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to Tegbe, dependable electricity infrastructure is essential to economic growth, enterprise development and employment generation, adding that the Mashi project would contribute to stronger foundations for prosperity in communities across the country.
The minister disclosed that the wayleave and compensation issues affecting the project had been satisfactorily resolved, clearing the way for construction to proceed. He urged TCN, the contractor and supervising engineers to maintain strict quality and safety standards throughout the project’s execution.
“With completion scheduled for 31 March 2027, our focus must be disciplined execution,” Tegbe said, calling on the project team to ensure that design, equipment manufacture, civil works, installation and testing met the required standards.
He stressed the need for proper documentation of inspections, prompt correction of defects and adherence to the construction timetable, warning that quality and safety must not be compromised in the rush to meet the deadline.
Tegbe also commended Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda for his support and cooperation, while acknowledging the contributions of the TCN leadership, traditional rulers, affected landowners and host communities towards resolving issues that could have delayed the project.
He appealed to residents of Mashi to support the construction process and protect the facility and its associated transmission lines after completion.
“To the people of Mashi, your partnership remains essential during construction and after commissioning,” he said, urging residents to report suspicious activities to TCN or security agencies to prevent vandalism and safeguard the infrastructure.
The minister further charged all institutions involved in the project to ensure that the groundbreaking ceremony was followed by measurable progress, regular community engagement and early resolution of emerging challenges.
He said the ultimate objective was to deliver a reliable facility capable of supporting businesses, households and future development in Mashi and surrounding communities.
