Humanitarian Ministry Honours Sununu, Celebrates ‘Legacy of Compassionate Leadership’ at Farewell

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has bid an emotional farewell to its outgoing Minister of State, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, praising his tenure as one marked by compassion, integrity, and impactful service delivery.

 

The development was disclosed in a press release issued by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction on April 2, 2026.

 

At a ceremony held in his honour, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, speaking on behalf of the Honourable Minister, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, described Sununu as “a pillar of strength whose leadership significantly advanced humanitarian interventions and strengthened institutional frameworks within the Ministry.”

 

He noted that the outgoing minister “combined administrative discipline with a human-centered approach,” adding that his leadership left “a lasting impact on both the system and the people it serves.”

 

Tributes also poured in from stakeholders and heads of agencies, with the Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Hon. Tijjani Aliyu, commending Sununu’s “visionary leadership, strong collaboration, and unwavering support to sister agencies.”

 

Similarly, the Director-General of the National Senior Citizens Centre and a representative of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities applauded his inclusive leadership style and dedication to vulnerable populations across the country.

 

The National Coordinator of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), Prof. Badamasi Lawal, described him as “a dependable leader whose guidance and support strengthened programme implementation and inter-agency cooperation.”

 

Staff members across different levels of the Ministry also paid glowing tributes. A director noted that “Dr. Sununu’s leadership was defined by openness, sincerity, and a genuine desire to see others succeed,” while a middle-level officer stated that “he created an enabling environment where every staff felt valued and motivated to contribute meaningfully.”

 

A junior staff member added emotionally that “his humility and fatherly disposition made him approachable to all, regardless of rank.”

 

In his response, Sununu expressed appreciation to the leadership and staff of the Ministry for their support, stating that his achievements were rooted in “faith, humility, and a deep commitment to humanity.”

 

He urged staff to remain united and committed to service, emphasizing that “true leadership is rooted in selfless service and integrity.”

 

The Ministry’s management and staff expressed gratitude for his contributions and wished him “continued success, divine guidance, and greater accomplishments in his future political endeavours.”

 

The event was attended by top government officials, directors, staff of the Ministry, and other stakeholders, who gathered to celebrate the outgoing minister’s service and legacy.
