…Opobo King Honours the philanthropist with Highest Women title in Opobo Kingdom
It was all bliss, glamour and display of the rich cultural tradition of Opobo kingdom in Rivers state, as HRM King (Dr) Dandeson Douglas Jaja, JP, Jeki V. Treaty King, Natural Ruler and Amayanabo of Opobo kingdom conferred on the Chairman and founder of Toby Jug foundation, prominent Woman leader and philanthropist Chief Sotonye Toby Fulton, the title of “Amaopuorubo” – the highest title for women in Opobo Kingdom
The event which took place on January 3, 2025, at the palace of the king of Opobo Kingdom was part of activities to mark 45 years on the throne and 21 years coronation anniversary of HRM King (Dr) Dandeson Douglas Jaja, JP, Jeki V. Treaty King, Natural Ruler and Amayanabo of Opobo kingdom
King Dandeson Douglas Jaja while conferring the prestigious Amaopuorubo title on Chief Sotonye Toby Fulton described her as a mother of integrity whose selfless contribution is not in doubt.
The Amaopuorubo title, traditionally reserved for women who have shown exceptional service to the community, represents the highest honour in Opobo kingdom’s cultural hierarchy.
The selection process for the Amaopuorubo title involves careful deliberation overseen by the King himself in demonstration of his kingdom’s commitment to recognizing excellence across gender lines.
As deeply rooted in Ijaw culture where titleholders serve as cultural ambassadors, the ‘Amaopuorubo’ title is no exception, with its additional advisory roles in kingdom affairs, contributing to decision-making and community development
The title, which ranks above the Balolo, has its male equivalent of the title of Amaopusenibo. Both titles complements and recognizes outstanding achievements in various fields including politics, philanthropy, academia, and community development.
His Royal Majesty King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, Jeki V of Opobo Kingdom, in the ceremony also bestowed honorary titles upon distinguished individuals, including the Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, who received the Balolo title.
These titles represent the Ijaw people’s enduring respect for service, leadership, and humanitarian contributions, while preserving cultural traditions.
