Nigerian Navy Deepens Shipbuilding, Special Forces Capacity in Strategic Egypt Partnership

The Nigerian Navy has strengthened its indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and maritime special operations readiness through a high-level engagement with a delegation from the Egyptian Navy Special Forces Brigade, under an ongoing cross-attachment programme.

The development was disclosed in a press statement issued by Aboodun Folorunsho, Navy Captain and Director of Naval Information.

According to the statement, the Egyptian delegation was hosted at Naval Dockyard Limited in Lagos, where they were taken through the facility’s operations, including ship design, construction, and depot-level maintenance.

“The engagement provided a platform for both navies to exchange knowledge and deepen collaboration in indigenous shipbuilding and sustainment,” the statement noted.

As part of the programme, the visiting team also participated in joint training exercises with the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service, focusing on advanced maritime operations.

“The training covered critical areas such as maritime interdiction, Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS), and hostage rescue operations,” Folorunsho stated.

He added that the exercises involved complex tactical scenarios, including coordinated insertions and real-time simulations, followed by structured debrief sessions.

“These engagements enabled both sides to exchange operational insights and best practices, further enhancing their combat readiness,” he said.

The Navy described the initiative as part of a broader effort to build a technologically advanced and mission-ready force through international collaboration.

“These combined activities underscore the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to building a combat-ready force through strategic partnerships and capacity development,” the statement added.

The initiative, according to the Navy, aligns with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, to strengthen indigenous capabilities and enhance operational effectiveness.

“The Nigerian Navy remains resolute in its drive to project maritime power, foster regional cooperation, and safeguard Nigeria’s maritime interests,” the statement concluded.

Security analysts say the collaboration reflects Nigeria’s increasing focus on defence diplomacy and local capacity development as key pillars in addressing evolving maritime security challenges.
