In a sweeping move to reinforce discipline and restore public confidence, the Nigeria Police Force has commenced disciplinary proceedings against 167 senior officers over alleged professional misconduct and related offences.

The high-level review, currently underway at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, signals a renewed push by the police leadership to enforce accountability and uphold ethical standards within its ranks.

According to a statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the exercise is being conducted by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), a statutory body responsible for handling cases involving senior officers.

The statement noted that the committee is reviewing cases involving officers from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police and above, with proceedings guided by due process and existing legal frameworks.

Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, declared that misconduct within the Force will not be tolerated.

“No officer found culpable of misconduct will be shielded from due process,” the IGP stated, emphasizing the importance of discipline and integrity in policing.

He further explained that the ongoing proceedings form part of broader institutional reforms aimed at strengthening internal control mechanisms and promoting professionalism across the Force.

“These disciplinary actions are critical to promoting ethical conduct and enhancing public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force,” he added.

The Force Disciplinary Committee, described as a key internal accountability mechanism, is tasked with ensuring a thorough, transparent, and fair review of all cases, with appropriate recommendations forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final decisions.

The police leadership reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of service, stressing that all officers must operate in line with the core values of professionalism, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

Observers say the development reflects increasing efforts by the Force to sanitize its system and reposition policing in Nigeria amid growing public demand for transparency and reform.
