The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is poised to dominate the 2027 general elections in Abia State, vowing that the party will clinch the governorship and sweep all legislative seats.
Kalu made the bold assertion in Abuja after receiving Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms purchased on his behalf by party stakeholders from across the three senatorial districts of the state, in a move seen as intensifying pressure on him to join the governorship race.
The development was disclosed in a statement from the Office of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, signed by Levinus Nwabughiogu.
Addressing the delegation, Kalu expressed confidence that the APC’s growing appeal in Abia would translate into electoral victory at all levels.
“We will not allow this dream to die. We will fight till the end. We will win the House of Assembly positions, win the House of Representatives, sweep the Senate seats and win the governorship,” he said.
He noted that increasing interest in the APC across Abia—from state assembly to governorship aspirants—signals a shift in political alignment within the state.
“It has never happened before that the party is witnessing this level of interest. It shows people are beginning to understand what APC stands for,” he added.
Despite the mounting calls for him to contest, Kalu emphasized that delivering massive support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains his top priority.
“The most important thing for me is to ensure that our people in the South-East stand solidly behind the President. Every other thing is secondary,” he stated.
Earlier, stakeholders from Abia North, Central, and South senatorial districts unanimously urged Kalu to accept the governorship challenge, citing his legislative performance and leadership qualities.
Speaking on behalf of Abia North, Chief James Uko Igwe (SAN) described Kalu’s record at the National Assembly as “outstanding,” insisting the state needs his brand of leadership.
“There is no better time than now for you to bring your spirit of statesmanship, unity, and consensus-building to Abia State,” he said.
Also, retired Major General Jack Nwaogbu, representing Abia Central, credited Kalu with revitalizing the APC structure in the state.
“The person who has united the party and brought it back to the people should take up the mantle of governance,” he noted.
For Abia South, former lawmaker Uzo Azubuike argued that Kalu’s leadership is crucial to boosting the party’s electoral fortunes and securing stronger support for the President in the South-East.
“We need a leader who can mobilize massive votes and deliver results across all levels, and we believe Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu is that leader,” he said.
The latest development signals a potential realignment in Abia politics ahead of 2027, with analysts closely watching whether Kalu will heed the calls to contest and lead the APC’s charge in the state.
