Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has sent a strong warning across the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force, ordering sweeping reforms, announcing the dismissal of officers over an extrajudicial killing in Delta State, and unveiling a new elite unit to tackle violent crimes nationwide.

The decisive moves were announced on Tuesday during an emergency security meeting convened by the police chief at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where top-ranking officers—including members of the Force Management Team, Assistant Inspectors-General, and Commissioners of Police, gathered to review operations and chart a new direction for policing in the country.

Addressing the high-level conference, Disu made it clear that indiscipline and abuse of power would no longer be tolerated under his leadership.

“Nigeria’s security challenges demand a Police Force that is transparent, disciplined, and intelligence-driven. There will be no room for misconduct,” he declared.

Delta Killing: Officers Dismissed, Case Heads to Court

Reacting to the controversial killing of a suspect in Delta State, the IGP condemned the act in strong terms, describing it as unlawful and a betrayal of the Force’s core values.

“The officers involved have been dismissed, and the matter has been forwarded for prosecution. We will not shield anyone who violates the law,” he stated, reinforcing a zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions.

Major Crime Busts and Rescues

Highlighting recent operational gains, Disu revealed that coordinated intelligence-led operations in April 2026 delivered significant breakthroughs in the fight against crime.

According to him, police operatives arrested 28 suspected terrorists, 51 murder suspects, 62 armed robbery suspects, 85 kidnapping suspects, and 54 suspected cultists.

He added that 189 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued, while security forces recovered 140 firearms, 1,074 rounds of ammunition, and 37 stolen vehicles.

“These results show what is possible when intelligence, professionalism, and coordination come together,” he said.

New Violent Crime Response Unit Launched

In a major reform move, the IGP announced the creation of a specialised Violent Crime Response Unit designed to rapidly tackle serious and organised crimes across the country.

The unit, he explained, will operate on intelligence-based deployment, undergo specialised training, and strictly adhere to human rights standards, with Commissioners of Police held directly accountable for its performance.

Push for Community Policing, Public Trust

Disu also directed Commissioners of Police nationwide to intensify community policing efforts by strengthening engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and grassroots stakeholders.

He emphasized the need for accessibility and transparency, instructing officers to make their contact details available to the public.

“Policing cannot succeed without the trust and cooperation of the people. We must be visible, accountable, and approachable,” he said.

Reaffirming the broader reform agenda, the IGP stressed that the Force remains committed to professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights, backed by accountability mechanisms such as the Police Complaints Response Unit.

“Our mission is clear—to protect lives, uphold the law, and build a Police Force Nigerians can trust,” Disu concluded.
