Democracy Day: Tinubu Building Stronger, More Inclusive Nigeria, Says Information Minister
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria, as activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration gather momentum across the country.
The assurance was given by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains focused on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting national unity, expanding economic opportunities and delivering sustainable development through the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The position was contained in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation (FMINO) and signed by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
Addressing journalists in Abuja as part of activities commemorating Democracy Day, Idris described this year’s celebration as particularly significant because it coincides with the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration.
“This year’s Democracy Day celebration is particularly significant as it coincides with the third anniversary of the Renewed Hope Administration. It offers an opportunity to take stock of our progress as a nation, review the impact of ongoing reforms, and reaffirm our collective commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive Nigeria,” he said.
The Minister noted that Democracy Day remains a historic occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, celebrate the resilience of democratic institutions and honour the sacrifices of heroes who fought for democratic governance.
“Democracy Day occupies a unique place in our national calendar. It provides an opportunity for us to reflect on our democratic journey, celebrate the resilience of our institutions, and honour the sacrifices of patriots who stood firm in the struggle for democratic governance,” Idris stated.
He paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola and other pro-democracy advocates whose sacrifices paved the way for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today. He also acknowledged the contributions of President Tinubu and numerous activists who played key roles in restoring and consolidating democracy in Nigeria.
According to him, Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule remain a remarkable achievement and evidence of the resilience and determination of the Nigerian people.
“Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance is a milestone worthy of celebration. It is a testament to the determination of Nigerians to uphold democratic values, strengthen national institutions, and continuously strive for a more prosperous and united nation,” he said.
Idris further explained that the administration remains committed to deepening democratic governance while implementing policies aimed at improving the lives of citizens and accelerating national development.
He said the Democracy Day press conference was organised to provide Nigerians and the international community with a comprehensive overview of the administration’s achievements, challenges and future direction over the last three years.
Representing President Tinubu at the event, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Interministerial Committee on Democracy Day 2026, Senator George Akume, described Nigeria’s democratic journey as a major national success story.
Akume said the administration’s economic reforms, though difficult, were necessary to reposition the economy and create opportunities for sustainable growth.
“The policy decisions of this administration, including the removal of fuel subsidy and foreign exchange reforms, were difficult but necessary. They have created fiscal space for critical investments in infrastructure, social interventions, education, healthcare, and economic development,” he said.
The SGF expressed confidence that Nigerians would continue to benefit from the reforms as government revenues improve and economic stability strengthens.
“As revenues improve and the economy stabilises, Nigerians will increasingly experience the benefits of these reforms,” Akume added.
The event was attended by several top government officials, including the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev; Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari; Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; Special Adviser on Media and Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala; permanent secretaries, heads of government agencies and other dignitaries.
The Democracy Day celebration is observed annually on June 12 in honour of Nigeria’s democratic struggle and the sacrifices of those who championed the nation’s return to civil rule.
