IGP Disu Orders Tougher Intelligence-Led Policing as Force Records Major Crime Busts Nationwide

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu has directed senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to intensify proactive and intelligence-driven policing strategies across the country, warning that security agencies must remain ahead of increasingly complex criminal threats ranging from terrorism and kidnapping to cybercrime and communal violence.
The directive came as the Nigeria Police Force announced significant operational gains, including the arrest of 199 suspected criminals and the rescue of 88 kidnapped victims in recent nationwide operations.
The position was contained in a statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, on June 9, 2026.
Speaking during the monthly conference with strategic senior officers at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday, the IGP stressed the need for stronger leadership, enhanced intelligence gathering, and improved coordination among police commands to effectively tackle evolving security challenges.
The meeting brought together Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and other senior officers to review the nation’s security situation and evaluate ongoing policing strategies.
According to the police chief, Nigeria continues to contend with multiple security threats, including kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, terrorism, banditry, farmer-herder conflicts, and cyber-enabled crimes.
“The Force must remain proactive, intelligence-driven and adaptive in addressing the evolving security challenges confronting our nation,” Disu charged the officers.
Highlighting recent achievements recorded by the Force since its last strategic conference in May 2026, the IGP disclosed that police operatives arrested eight suspected terrorists, 55 kidnapping suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 29 murder suspects, and 42 suspected cultists.
He further revealed that 88 kidnapped victims were rescued during various operations across the country.
“The Force has recorded significant operational successes through intelligence-led operations and coordinated policing efforts nationwide,” he said.
The IGP also announced the recovery of 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition, and 28 stolen vehicles, describing the achievements as evidence of the Force’s commitment to combating criminality and safeguarding lives and property.
To strengthen security at the grassroots level, Disu directed Commissioners of Police across the federation to deepen community policing initiatives and institutionalize regular engagements with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth organizations, market associations, and transport unions.
“Public trust and community partnership remain indispensable to effective policing and crime prevention,” the IGP stated.
He emphasized that sustained collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities remains critical to intelligence gathering and crime prevention.
The police boss also reiterated the Force’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and ethical conduct, urging senior officers to lead by example by maintaining discipline within their commands and prioritizing personnel welfare.
He further underscored the importance of responsible engagement with the media, noting that effective communication is essential for promoting public understanding of police activities and countering misinformation.
“Senior officers must ensure strict compliance with established operational procedures while fostering public confidence through transparency and professionalism,” he added.
The conference forms part of the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing efforts to strengthen internal security architecture, improve operational efficiency, and enhance public safety across the country.
The Force reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led policing, strategic leadership, community partnership, and the protection of lives and property as it continues to confront emerging security threats nationwide.
