The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, urging Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and recommit themselves to the principles of unity, responsible citizenship, and good governance.
The announcement was contained in a press release issued by the Federal Ministry of Interior and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Ministry. The statement conveyed the declaration made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
Announcing the holiday, the Minister described June 12 as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s democratic evolution and a day set aside to honour the courage, sacrifices, and resilience of Nigerians who fought for the entrenchment of democratic governance in the country.
According to him, the significance of Democracy Day extends beyond celebration, serving as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with democratic freedoms and the collective duty to safeguard the nation’s democratic institutions.
“June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible in this country,” the statement noted.
The Minister reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to preserving and strengthening democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and respect for constitutional governance.
He emphasized that the Federal Government remains resolute in upholding these principles as part of its broader agenda for national development and democratic consolidation.
The statement further highlighted the government’s determination to maintain peace and security across the country, noting that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures aimed at protecting lives and property.
According to the Minister, a stable and secure environment remains critical to the growth of democracy and the advancement of sustainable national development.
He also called on Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day as an opportunity for introspection and civic responsibility, urging citizens to support democratic institutions and contribute positively to nation-building.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
The Federal Government reiterated that the annual observance of Democracy Day remains a tribute to the heroes and heroines of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, whose sacrifices continue to inspire efforts toward building a more united, peaceful, and prosperous nation.
As Nigerians prepare to observe the public holiday, the government expressed optimism that the values of democracy, justice, accountability, and national cohesion would continue to guide the country’s development and strengthen its democratic foundations.
