Nigeria Police Launches Five-Day Leadership Programme to Empower Female Officers

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced a five-day Women Police Leadership Programme aimed at equipping female police officers with enhanced leadership, management and professional skills as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional reforms and promote gender-responsive policing across the country.

The initiative is contained in a press statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, on June 29, 2026.

According to the statement, the leadership programme is being implemented with the support of the Government of Germany in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), GS Foundation, CLEEN Foundation, and the Nigeria Police Reform Secretariat. It brings together female police officers drawn from Commands and Formations nationwide to enhance their leadership competencies, strategic management capabilities and knowledge of contemporary policing.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Training and Development, AIG Uche Ifeanyi Henry, reaffirmed the commitment of the Force leadership to continuous capacity building as a key pillar of ongoing police reforms.

He urged participants to maximise the opportunity presented by the programme by actively engaging in the various training sessions and applying the knowledge gained to improve service delivery and strengthen leadership within the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Inspector-General of Police remains committed to continuous capacity building as a cornerstone of ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force. Participants should actively engage in the sessions and apply the knowledge acquired to improve service delivery and strengthen leadership within the Force,” AIG Henry said.

Delivering the keynote address, the Director-General of the National Institute of Police Studies, Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, stressed the need for sustained leadership development for female police officers, describing it as critical to improving professionalism, institutional effectiveness and operational excellence within the Force.

“Sustained leadership development for female officers is essential to enhancing professionalism, institutional effectiveness and operational excellence within the Nigeria Police Force,” Prof. Ogunsakin stated.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to investing in the training and retraining of personnel, promoting professionalism, advancing gender inclusion and implementing reforms aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and improving policing services across Nigeria.
