The Nigeria Police Force has concluded a five-day election security management training programme as part of a nationwide initiative to prepare 10,000 officers for electoral duties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was announced in a press release issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, on November 2, 2026, from the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The training, organised in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), ended on October 29, 2026, with the first phase covering 18 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
At the commencement of the programme, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, charged officers to maintain neutrality, professionalism and accountability while handling election-related duties.
The IGP urged personnel to protect voters, electoral officials and the electoral process “without fear or favour,” stressing the importance of impartial policing in ensuring credible and peaceful elections.
The programme covered election security management, electoral laws, strategic communication, intelligence-led operations, threat assessment and the statutory responsibilities of the Police.
It also emphasised legality, impartiality and inter-agency collaboration as essential requirements for effective election security operations.
Speaking on behalf of participants at the closing of the programme, the course representative thanked the IGP and the NPTF for the opportunity, while commending the facilitators for combining professional expertise with practical insights.
The participants pledged to apply the knowledge acquired in their respective commands and formations, particularly in protecting voters’ rights and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
They also undertook to share the lessons with other officers to promote uniform professional standards in election security operations nationwide.
The Police Force said the initiative reflects its commitment to sustained capacity building, intelligence-led planning and inter-agency cooperation to provide a safe environment for Nigerians to exercise their electoral rights.
