DAILY HOPE DEVOTIONAL: JUNE 22 Topic: LIVING IN HARMONY WITH ONE ANOTHER (2) (Having the Right Relationship) Scriptures: 1 Peter 3: 8 – 14; 5: 5, Rom. 12: 10, 17; Psalm 133: 1
It will be good to start today’s devotional with a quote from the Bible thus: “Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this, you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” (1 Peter 3: 8 – 9).
A fulfilled life is that lived in harmony with one another. It is characterized by unity, sympathy, feeling for one another, compassion and humility. Have the golden rule in mind, “…therefore, all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them” (Mathew 7:12).
Christ Jesus’ simple statement of respect for the lives and dignity of others is the foundation for a peaceful and harmonious co-existence. Luke 10:29, “…who is my neighbor?” Jesus told the story of a traveler who was beaten, robbed, and left to die on the side of the road. While several of this man’s countrymen passed him by, a Samaritan stopped to help. He provided aid on the side of the road and then transported the injured man to an inn where he could be further taken care of. He paid for the treatment and even provided for his upkeep.
We are children of one father as Christians, our brotherhood and sisterhood with one another is already established within the reality of the spiritual relation to God. This inspires us to follow the golden rule and love for neighbours. Some of the golden rules are (1). “Be kindly affectionate to one another. (2). “…Cloth yourselves with humility”. (3). “…put on the apron of humility”. Jesus Himself washed the dirty feet of the disciples (John 13: 1 – 17). The one to whom the most was given bending to serve the least!! Isn’t it ironic? To love others is a divine command. Therefore, each and every one of us has the ability to fulfill such a heavenly obligation.
Having a right relationship with one another despite the fact that we live in a world of sharply divided opinion; can only be possible, first; if we love God sincerely then, second; we can love our neighbours as ourselves. *When we recognize the equal worth of each of God’s children, it will lead to a natural acceptance of unity in diversity.
