Olorogun Jaro Egbo Abolished illegal Collection of Levies in Ughelli Urban Markets

Following the stakeholders meeting held today, Thursday, 14th November, 2024 to resolve the crisis between Otor – Iwhreko and Ekiugbo Community at the residence of the Executive Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area, Olorogun Jaro Egbo according to press statement e-signed by Press Unit,Office of the Executive Chairman, Ughelli North Local Government Council has abolish illegal collection of levies that has been prevailing at the Ughelli main Market. In the reconciliation and peace accord meeting with representatives of the two crisis-prone communities, Barr Jaro Egbo stressed the importance of adhering to the law, warning that defaulters would face legal consequences.

Key Resolutions:

– Reaffirmation of Local Government Authority: The Local Government Council will administer the market and collect levies and revenues as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.
-Ban on Illegal Levies: Both communities (Ekiugbo and Otor Iwhreko) are henceforth prohibited from collecting levies from market and street traders.
– Security Measures: Security agencies will henceforth deal with anyone engaging in illegal levy collection.

.Wrong trading activities: Trading activities along the road or walkways at Otor Iwhreko, Ekiugbo and Otovwodo Markets shall henceforth be illegal and offenders shall be arrested and prosecuted.

– Boundary Dispute Resolution between Ekiugbo and Otor Iwhreko: That the issue will be referred to the State Government in Asaba for final resolution.
– Establishment of Police Posts: Police/Army Command will set up posts on both sides of the river striding of the market to maintain peace.

– Prohibition of Illegal Levies: Henceforth, none of the communities shall collect any form of illegal levies from market traders.

The meeting culminated in the signing of a communiqué by both communities, local and state government representatives, security Agencies, and representatives of Ughelli kingdom, solidifying their commitment to peace in the markets.

By taking these steps, the Council Chairman, Olorogun Jaro Egbo has demonstrated his dedication to resolving communal conflicts and promoting economic development in the region, addressing concerns that have led to previous clashes over land disputes and leadership tussles in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
