In a groundbreaking development, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has officially granted Kogi State the authority to oversee the generation and distribution of electricity within its jurisdiction.

This historic move is set to transform the energy landscape of the state, positioning Kogi as a model for energy independence and efficient power management in Nigeria.

The announcement was made by Engineer Abdulmutalib Muhammed, the Commissioner for Rural and Energy Development, during a press briefing held in Lokoja on Wednesday. The declaration followed a crucial deliberation at the State Executive Council meeting, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing energy access and improving the quality of life for residents.

Speaking at the briefing, Engineer Muhammed described the decision as a significant milestone for Kogi State. He noted that the move aligns with the state government’s strategic vision to foster economic growth, industrialization, and rural electrification by tapping into local resources and ensuring efficient management of energy systems.

The Commissioner further stated that the initiative would create numerous job opportunities, attract investments, and accelerate the industrialization of the state. This will also provide a sustainable solution to the frequent power outages and energy challenges that have hampered development in Kogi for years.

The state government, under the leadership of Governor Ododo Ahmed Usman (OAU), has been proactive in advocating for policies that promote local control over critical resources. This latest development reflects the governor’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for innovation and infrastructure development in the energy sector.

As Kogi State prepares to take on this monumental task, stakeholders across various sectors have expressed optimism about the potential positive impact on the state’s economy and the wellbeing of its citizens. This new chapter in Kogi’s energy management story serves as a reminder of the critical role states can play in addressing Nigeria’s power challenges.
