Rivers Politics: Governor Fubara, a Victim of His Indecision
By Alabi Umegbewe
One of the factors for measuring a mature and competent leader is his ability to take thoughtful decisions and take responsibility for it.
What is happening in Rivers State politics today is the consequences of the indecision of the governor.
The aim of every political party is to take control of government. That’s why before a political party goes into election, the leaders known as the caucus will meet and conclude on very important issues such as candidates to field for the election, strategies to adopt to emerge victorious and how to structure the government in case they win.
The case was not different in the issue of Fubara’s governorship. Party leaders had met with him and concluded on how the party should run the state at the event of victory. Before advancing to the next stage of the election process, he had agreed to the terms.
Days after his election and subsequent inauguration, “fair wether” came in , manipulated him against his decisions and commitments before the election. All of a sudden, he was put on a reverse gear. All over the world, any position you see a strong accord between a successor and his predecessor, just know that promises are kept, decisions honoured and integrity is upheld.
Governor Fubara and other leaders in Rivers State were in the office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, a gentleman agreement was reached as a political solution caused by his own inability to keep to his bargain with party leader, and willingly he signed. An agreement, if implemented would have laid to rest the political crisis distabilizing and distorting governance in the state today.
About 7 days after his arrival from Abuja, the same set of crisis merchants visited him, brainwashed and instigated him against the presidency. He openly declared that he would shock them ( President Tinubu and others).
Show me a leader so unstable in his decision and I will show you my governor from Opobo. No wonder Shakespeare once described “man as a unique and isolated individual in an indeffrent or hostile universe, responsible for his own actions…”.
If not indecision, what would make a man, on the exalted seat of a governor say one thing in the morning and do the exact opposite in the evening? When his caretaker chairmen were sworn in, he directed them to pay all monies owed to all officials of the local government occasioned by his malicious seizure of council allocations. Days later, he acted the script given to him. He reversed his directive by instructing them to pay only council officials that are simplified. According to his decision makers, that will compel people who are not in his camp to join him.
What is going on in Rivers State today is the consequence of the indecision of a man that is elected to take decision. Though manipulated by certain forces, around him, but one would expect those who genuinely love him save his sinking government.
The measure of a man is his ability to make decisions and take responsibility.
