By Wisdom|Pan Afric|Abuja
Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has embarked on a transformative journey aimed at repositioning Benue State as a hub of socio-economic empowerment that’s birthing common good for Benue state and her people. His administration’s midterm achievements span critical sectors, reflecting a commitment to sustainable development and improved livelihoods for the state’s residents.
Agricultural Development
Recognizing agriculture as the backbone of Benue’s economy, Governor Alia’s administration procured and distributed over 100 trucks of fertilizer to farmers at subsidized rates, significantly boosting agricultural productivity. The government also approved counterpart funding for the International Fund for Agricultural Development’s (IFAD) Value Chain Development Programme, enhancing rice and cassava production across eight local government areas. Collaborations with agricultural input suppliers have ensured the availability of improved seeds and seedlings, while partnerships with agencies like the French Development Agency have revitalized projects such as the swine/crop integrated initiative in Yandev, Gboko Local Government Area. Plans are also underway to dredge the River Benue to facilitate better agricultural activities and transportation of produce.
Infrastructure and Urban Renewal
In a bid to enhance connectivity and urban aesthetics, the administration has awarded 51 road projects, including the construction of underpasses in Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo. The ‘Light Up Makurdi’ project has illuminated major streets, improving security and extending commercial activities into the evening hours. Renovations of the State Secretariat and the Benue State House of Assembly Complex have provided conducive environments for effective governance.
Economic Empowerment and Wealth Creation
To stimulate economic growth, the government has initiated the revival of state-owned enterprises such as Benue Breweries and Taraku Oil Mills, aiming to create job opportunities and boost internally generated revenue. The Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC) has been revitalized, leading to the commissioning of ventures like a bakery and water factory, and the launch of the Emperor Fertilizer and Motorcycle Hire Scheme. Additionally, the administration has partnered with the Office of the Vice President to establish a multifunctional fashion hub, set to benefit over 250 professionals in the industry.
Education and Human Capital Development
Emphasizing the importance of education, Governor Alia’s administration has allocated 15% of the 2024 budget to the sector, surpassing the federal allocation. The government covered examination fees for students in public secondary schools sitting for WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB exams, alleviating financial burdens on families. The establishment of the Benue State Education Quality Assurance Agency (BEQA) ensures continuous monitoring and improvement of educational standards. Notably, four Benue secondary school students clinched an international debate trophy in Indonesia, showcasing the positive outcomes of these educational investments.
Healthcare Improvements
The health sector has witnessed significant advancements, including the overhaul of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital and the employment of 500 new staff to augment healthcare delivery. The Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital in Makurdi now offers full clinical services, aiming to reduce maternal mortality and provide free medical services to women and children under five. Furthermore, the administration reintroduced the Bond Scheme for medical students of Benue origin, providing financial support to future healthcare professionals.
Security and Social Welfare
Addressing security concerns, the government has initiated the process of resettling displaced persons by lobbying the Federal Government for the construction of resettlement homes. Collaborations with security agencies have led to a reduction in inter-ethnic conflicts and farmer-herder crises. The establishment of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards aims to bolster local security efforts, ensuring the safety of lives and property.
Youth and Women Empowerment
The administration’s focus on empowering youth and women is evident through various initiatives. The ‘Benue Go Digital’ program aims to train 10,000 youths in ICT, equipping them with skills relevant to the global market. Additionally, the government has facilitated the training of community interest groups in climate-smart agricultural practices, promoting sustainable livelihoods.
Governor Hyacinth Alia’s midterm tenure reflects a dedicated effort to transform Benue State into a center of socio-economic empowerment. Through strategic initiatives across agriculture, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security, his administration is laying the foundation for a prosperous and self-reliant Benue.
