Sustainable Development Goals Council- Office of the SSA to the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement.

African Day is more than just a day on the calendar; it’s a poignant reminder of our shared heritage and a tribute to the resilience and spirit of the African people. We take this moment to reflect on our journey, honouring our ancestors who paved the way for our freedom and self-determination. Today, as stewards of their legacy, it is our responsibility to empower the future generation of leaders through education, creativity, and innovation.

The theme, “Revisiting Our History, Shaping Our Future,” resonates profoundly in the context of our youth. As the leaders of tomorrow, young Africans have a pivotal role to play in harnessing the power of our past to forge a new trajectory for the continent. This year’s theme resonates deeply with the aspirations of our youth and underscores our commitment to sustainable development in realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As the National Coordinator of the SDGs National Students Council, I am especially proud to highlight the vital role of students in shaping the narrative of our continent. Young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the catalysts for change today. We must continue to foster an environment that nurtures their talents and allows their voices to be heard.

*The theme “Revisiting Our History” calls for a deep and critical examination of Africa’s past. It necessitates discussions around pre-colonial histories, the legacies of colonialism, and the post-colonial experiences that have shaped our nations. In understanding these narratives, we not only honor those who came before us but also equip ourselves with the knowledge necessary to advocate for equity, justice, and reconciliation. It is crucial that the voices of our diverse cultures, ethnicities, and social movements are heard and validated in this discourse.*

However, as we delve into the past, we must remain fixated on our collective future. “Shaping Our Future” speaks to the urgent need for innovation, investment in education, and sustainable practices that can propel us into a more prosperous era. The SDGs provide a framework that empowers our youth to become active participants in driving social change. We must harness our imaginations and creativity to cultivate solutions that address issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and unemployment.

*We stand resolutely in support of initiatives that promote civic engagement and community service. In partnership with educational institutions, NGOs, and governmental agencies, we strive to foster an environment where young people can learn, grow, and impact their communities positively. Over the coming months, we will launch campaigns that will focus on leadership training, entrepreneurship development, and community outreach, all aimed at equipping our youth with the tools they need to effect meaningful change.*

As we celebrate African Day today, let us embolden our narratives and celebrate not just our history but the vibrant cultures and traditions that make our continent unique. We must embrace our differences while recognizing the unifying threads that bind us as Africans. From the bustling markets of Lagos to the ancient landscapes of Ethiopia, our stories are interwoven, and together we hold the key to our destiny.

In the spirit of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, let us reflect on the past and shape the future, let us do so with intention and purpose. May we create a continent where peace, justice, and prosperity reign supreme. Together, let us build a legacy that not only honours our history but inspires future generations to take the reins and lead us towards an even more promising Africa.*

Thank you for your commitment, passion, and dedication to this cause as we embark on this journey of rediscovery and renewal.
