DAILY HOPE DEVOTIONAL: AUGUST 18 HOW IS GOD OR JESUS YOUR LORD? (1) SCRIPTURE: ACTS 4: 29 – 31

Spread the love

Millions of people, from the Old Testament time till now, find it easy to address God or Jesus Christ as “LORD.” We attach higher title such as “the Lord God”, “the Sovereign Lord”, “the Almighty”, “the LORD of Lords” etc., in our speeches and writings all the time. A curious question here is; how really do we mean when calling either God or Jesus Christ “The Lord? In other words, of what honour and reverence do we attach to God or Jesus Christ when calling them” Our Lord? There are many Hebrew, Greek and Latin words translated “Lord” or “the Lord” or “the Lord God.” Among all the words, this devotional chose to talk on that used in the lead text above. Jesus Apostles discovered the dangerous threats orchestrated upon them by the authorities in their days, aimed at stopping them from preaching the Goodnews. They started a prayer thus: “Now, Lord, look on their threats…” The Greek word the Lord here is derived from is “Despota” meaning “Sovereign Master” or “Sovereign Ruler.”

Referring to God or Jesus Christ as our “Sovereign Master” or “Sovereign Ruler” calls to the mind that, we have accepted the fact that we are submitting to the Supreme Authority; the Master or Ruler who have no equal either in the heaven or on the earth. The word “despota” is that used by the slave Jews or servants for their masters. The slaves or the servants see or take their master as supreme to them in everything. The servants or slaves know that they have nothing to themselves in this world again, because all they have are for their masters. Jesus’ Apostles during the Acts of the Apostles know that God is their Lord and that they are like slaves under God and His Son Jesus Christ. Every earthly slave or servant believed on their masters as ones with power to deliver them from troubles. They therefore, never refer their problems to other slave masters other than their own.

Jesus’ Apostles here trusted God as the Most Powerful Being above all authorities on the earth. They understood God as one who can easily discomfit the authorities threatening them not to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They cried to Him under this unique belief. God heard them quickly. For Christians of this age, how much of trust do we have on God or Jesus Christ as our Lords? Do we actually trust them as Being with Supreme Powers above satanic powers, earthly powers as well as the powers of the governments of the days? Do we just call God or Jesus “The Lord” for calling sake? Beloved, could it be that we are where we are, as in being subdued completely by other forces because we never take God or Jesus a real LORD of our lives.

PRAYER:

JEHOVAH MY FATHER, JESUS MY LORD, I admit today, your supremacy over me as my LORDS. Grant me the grace for total submission to you. Cause other Christians to do the same in Jesus name.
