The Anambra State Police Command has arrested four suspected cultists following a violent early morning clash at Nsugbe, Anambra East Local Government Area.
According to a statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the incident occurred on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at about 7:00 am, when armed miscreants suspected to be cultists were spotted behind Nwafor Orizu College of Education. They were said to be attacking one another with “cutlasses, broken bottles, daggers and other dangerous weapons.”
A swift response by a combined Police and Vigilante team led to the arrest of four suspects identified as Oyachonam Friday (26), Akachukwu Ekwenze (23), David Chukwuma (25), and Eziolise Aloysius (23). Others, however, escaped into nearby bushes.
The statement revealed that one of the suspects, David Chukwuma, sustained machete cuts during the fracas. “He has been provided with medical care and is currently responding to treatment for onward necessary action by the operatives,” SP Ikenga said.
All four suspects reportedly confessed to being members of the dreaded ‘AYES’ confraternity, while investigations continue to track down the fleeing cultists.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured residents of the state that the Command will remain firm against violent crimes. “The Command remains relentless in its fight against cultism and other forms of violent crimes in the State,” he declared.
SP Ikenga added that efforts are ongoing to restore calm and ensure that cult-related violence is stamped out of Anambra communities.
