DAILY HOPE DEVOTIONAL: OCTOBER 13 IS THE BLOOD STILL CRYING? (3) SCRIPTURE: NUM. 35: 33; LAM. 4: 14; PROV. 28: 17

As learnt from the previous devotionals, God hates shedding of innocent blood and still punishes those who shed innocent blood. Even though the whole world is soaked with blood of murdered innocent people and the exercises are on continuity; God’s prescribed punishments still come upon people and nations who shed innocent blood. The murdering of the innocent people before God evokes His anger. Hearing the shouting and the groaning of the innocent people being killed give God displeasure. He thus goes ahead to pass judgments on the murderers. Any person’s blood that is killed attracts God’s judgment, because He made all humans in His own image (Gen. 9: 6).

The Bible said that killing of innocent people pollutes the land upon which the blood is spilled and no atonement will be enough to forgive those who kill others (Numbers 35: 33). This means, the punishment upon the land or a nation or city which innocent blood is shed remains forever. God can thus visit the people in that nation or city with deserved punishments if they fail to repent. Again, God allows the ground upon which innocent blood is spilled becomes polluted, causing the land never to produce good harvest if anything is planted in it (Gen. 4: 11 – 12). We are witnessing scarcity of food in Nigeria today, for instance, as the result of the innocent blood flowing on our lands everywhere. Around the early 1960s, a little acre of land yielded plentiful harvests in Nigeria. But this is not so today.

Shedding of innocent blood usually results in wandering about of the killers. This is a punishment from God. We can use Nigeria again as example of this. What makes those herdsmen who are killers, the bandits, the kidnappers and others shifting bases in the bush, wandering from place to place? It is a sign of punishment on them from God. The Bible said the killers of the innocents wandered, in blindness, in the streets because they were defiled with blood and, also a man with the guilt of human blood will be a fugitive until death (Lam. 4: 14; Prov. 28: 17). Killer of innocent people often lay false charge on them before killing them. On this God said: “…never allow innocent people to be killed as punishment for something they did not do. Whoever kills an innocent person is evil, and I will not treat a guilty person as innocent” (Exod. 23: 7 Easy-To-Read Bible). God is not a man who can lie. Surely He will punish those shedding human blood. Those in the acts should not deceive themselves that God will not punish them. And those of us watching with lamentations should remain calm. God is doing something! Let us the Christians keep interceding for the nations.

PRAYER:

JEHOVAH, GOD OF MERCY, see the stain of the blood of Jesus against the flowing blood of the innocent people killed in Nigeria and other places and grant us mercy and grace in Jesus name.
