The Chairman of the Ebonyi State Council of Elders, Chief Benjamin Okah, has stated that the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, has ensured political harmony among political parties in the state, thereby ruling out tensions witnessed in the past during electioneering campaigns.

Engineer Ben Okah, who disclosed this Tuesday in Abakaliki, said it is rare for a dominant political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to maintain such harmony with opposition political parties.

According to him, Governor Francis Nwifuru had stated that he would not impose candidates on the members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while calling on opposition political parties to emulate the governor.

He further said the electioneering period was a time to test the peaceful nature of the state, “This is the time to test the state. You know, how peaceful is the state. How mature is the state. How mature are the politicians”, he said.

He commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for maintaining political harmony as well for according respect to leaders, who had served the state.

His words, ‘With the person we have as governor, he has promoted harmony among political leaders.
The harmony among the political leaders is not that you must enter his party. But someone who has attained a particular stage in life should receive respect from his own state.

“So, nobody is being abused. Nobody is being stopped from his campaigns. The people who wine and dine with the governor, some of them are also in other parties.

“The movement is going on. So, I think the election coming up will show how the popular party, everybody is free to contest. The governor has made it very clear that he will not impose candidates in his own party, which is the dominant party.

“So, if the party that does not impose candidates is the dominant party, other parties will follow suit. So, I think it is going to be a very peaceful, free and fair primary election that will come up by next month”, he said.

He further said that there is no any iota of tension in the state arising from the build up to the primaries elections by political parties and to the general elections.

“And if you listen to the airwaves, if you are in the streets, you see that there is no tension. Unless you can prove me otherwise. There is no tension about election in Ebonyi state.

He said it was not the case with previous elections in the state, “By this time, in other times, there would have been so many people struggling and abusing each other. But there is tranquilly in the state. Not minding that elections will be starting next month”, he stressed.
