As Nigeria prepares to mark the 27th anniversary of democratic rule, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity, and addressing the country’s pressing challenges under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The assurance came as Nigerians gathered for a special Juma’at prayer session in Abuja as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration scheduled for June 12.

The position of the Federal Government was contained in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation and signed by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Friday.

The Minister said the Democracy Day observance provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made by the nation’s democratic heroes and recommit themselves to the ideals of constitutional governance, unity, and national development.

“Today, we joined millions of Nigerians in offering prayers for our nation as part of activities marking the 27th Democracy Day Celebration. This solemn Juma’at service reminds us that Nigeria’s progress, unity and stability require not only good governance but also the prayers, support and active participation of all citizens,” Idris stated.

He paid tribute to late democracy icon Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, describing him as a symbol of courage, resilience, and commitment to the democratic aspirations of Nigerians.

“As we commemorate Democracy Day, we reflect on the sacrifices of our heroes, especially Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose courage, resilience and commitment to the will of the people remain enduring symbols of Nigeria’s democratic journey,” he said.

According to the Minister, Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance remain a testament to the resilience of the nation’s democratic institutions and the unwavering commitment of citizens to constitutional rule.

“Democracy Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the strength of our democratic institutions and the collective commitment of Nigerians to constitutional rule. Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance testify to the resilience of our democracy and the determination of our people to uphold democratic values,” he noted.

Idris further emphasized that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains focused on deepening democratic governance while fostering national cohesion and inclusive development.

“Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and addressing the challenges confronting our nation,” he stated.

Calling for greater unity among Nigerians, the Minister urged citizens to embrace peaceful coexistence, dialogue, and responsible citizenship as critical pillars for national progress.

“Nigeria’s strength lies in our diversity, and our future depends on our ability to work together in the interest of our nation. Let us continue to reject division, embrace dialogue and promote values that strengthen our democracy and foster national cohesion,” he said.

He expressed optimism that through collective effort and patriotism, Nigeria would continue to advance on the path of peace, prosperity, and democratic consolidation.

“Together, we can build a stronger, more prosperous and united Nigeria for present and future generations,” Idris added.

The Minister concluded with prayers for the nation, asking God to bless Nigeria, guide its leaders, protect security personnel, and grant the country enduring peace, unity, and prosperity.

Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day annually on June 12 in honour of the late MKO Abiola and the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in the nation’s history.
