The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reaffirmed its commitment to international peacekeeping operations and global security, as it joined the international community to commemorate the 2026 International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, paying tribute to peacekeepers worldwide for their courage, professionalism, and sacrifices in promoting peace and stability across conflict-affected regions.

The position was contained in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, and made available to journalists in Abuja on June 17, 2026.

Marking the occasion, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, honoured the memory of peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving under the United Nations flag, describing their sacrifices as a lasting inspiration in the global pursuit of peace and security.

According to the IGP, Nigeria has continued to play a significant role in international peace support operations through the deployment of police officers to various missions under the United Nations, African Union and regional bodies.

He noted that Nigerian police personnel have consistently distinguished themselves through professionalism, expertise and dedication while serving in conflict and post-conflict environments around the world.

“Officers of the Nigeria Police Force have served with distinction in numerous United Nations, African Union and regional peacekeeping missions, enhancing Nigeria’s reputation as a responsible contributor to international peace and security,” the IGP stated.

Speaking on this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace,” Disu stressed the importance of sustained investments in peacebuilding initiatives, institutional strengthening, capacity development, technology and international cooperation.

He observed that emerging security threats such as terrorism, transnational organised crime, cyber-enabled offences, violent extremism and communal conflicts require innovative and collaborative approaches to security management.

The police chief emphasized the need to adequately equip peacekeepers with modern training, technology and operational resources necessary to effectively address evolving security challenges.

“Contemporary security threats require innovative and collaborative approaches to peace and security management,” he said, adding that investment in peace remains critical to achieving sustainable global stability.

The IGP also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of female peacekeepers and called for increased participation and leadership opportunities for women in peace operations worldwide.

While appreciating the sacrifices made by peacekeepers and their families, Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening its peacekeeping capabilities and supporting initiatives aimed at advancing international peace, security and stability.

He further reiterated the Force’s dedication to professionalism, capacity building and strategic global partnerships that promote effective peacekeeping operations and sustainable peace across the world.

The annual United Nations Peacekeepers Day is observed globally to honour military, police and civilian personnel serving in peace operations and to remember those who have lost their lives in the service of peace. Since its establishment, Nigeria has remained one of Africa’s leading contributors to international peacekeeping missions, deploying thousands of personnel to various conflict zones across the globe.
