TCN Restores Critical Benin–Egbin 330kV Line, Intensifies Efforts to Fully Restore Power Supply to Lagos
By Pan Afric Reporters
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line following a major power disruption that affected the Lagos electricity network on Thursday, while engineers continue emergency repairs on the Benin–Omotoso 330kV transmission line to ensure the full restoration of bulk power supply to the Lagos complex.
The development was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and signed by Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs.
According to the statement, the power disruption occurred at approximately 8:19 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2026, when the national grid experienced voltage instability that rapidly spread across the Lagos corridor.
The incident led to the loss of some generating stations, transmission line outages and the interruption of electricity supply to Lagos and its surrounding areas.
TCN explained that, in response to the emergency, the National Control Centre immediately directed several power generation companies to reduce electricity output in order to stabilise the system, arrest the resulting frequency rise and prevent further disruption to the national grid.
The statement further revealed that the Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe, promptly convened an emergency meeting with the leadership of the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to coordinate restoration efforts and develop immediate solutions to the outage.
The company confirmed that one of the affected transmission lines, the Benin–Egbin 330kV line, has now been fully restored and is transmitting bulk electricity.
However, TCN noted that engineers from its Benin and Omotoso sub-regions are working round the clock to repair faults on the Benin–Omotoso 330kV transmission line to achieve full restoration of power supply to the Lagos electricity network.
Expressing regret over the disruption, the company apologised to affected consumers.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience and discomfort this incident has caused residents, businesses, and all electricity customers in the affected areas.”
TCN assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Power and all relevant agencies are making every effort to restore normal bulk power transmission as quickly as possible.
“Please be assured that the Ministry of Power and all relevant agencies are doing everything possible to rectify the line, to enable normal bulk power transmission along the affected line.”
The company reiterated that its long-term objective remains the stabilisation and strengthening of the national grid to minimise similar incidents in the future.
“Our goal is to stabilize and strengthen the national grid, with the aim of minimising such recurrence.”
TCN appealed to electricity consumers in the affected areas to remain patient while restoration works continue, assuring them that regular updates would be provided as progress is made.
The company also thanked Nigerians for their understanding and continued support during the ongoing restoration process.
