The Federal Government has announced a fresh push to stabilise Nigeria’s electricity grid, unveiling plans to invest in critical transmission infrastructure aimed at ending recurring grid collapses, reducing voltage fluctuations and ensuring more reliable electricity supply across the country.

The initiative, which forms part of the Federal Government’s broader power sector reforms, will focus on strengthening the national transmission network through targeted investments, improved monitoring systems and enhanced collaboration among key industry institutions.

The development was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Power and signed by Clement Ezeorah, Deputy Director (Press and Public Relations), on July 31, 2026.

Speaking on the initiative, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the administration was moving beyond temporary interventions to pursue a comprehensive overhaul of the nation’s transmission infrastructure.

According to the Minister, ensuring a stable electricity grid remains central to the government’s efforts to improve power generation, transmission and distribution.

“We cannot talk about generation gains or distribution reforms if the grid itself is fragile. This administration is committed to a stable, resilient national grid, not as a slogan, but as a measurable, time-bound programme of work,” Tegbe said.

To drive the reforms, the Ministry disclosed that it has constituted a Technical Working Committee on Grid Stabilisation, comprising engineering and regulatory experts tasked with addressing transmission bottlenecks, ageing infrastructure and persistent system failures that have affected electricity supply nationwide.

The committee will work closely with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to identify priority intervention areas across the national grid.

According to the Ministry, planned investments will focus on reinforcing critical transmission corridors, expanding grid redundancy and modernising control and monitoring systems to reduce the frequency and impact of nationwide outages.

The announcement comes amid sustained government efforts to rebuild public confidence in Nigeria’s power sector after years of unstable electricity supply and repeated grid failures.

Acknowledging public scepticism over previous reform promises, Tegbe said the Tinubu administration understands that Nigerians expect tangible results rather than assurances.

“We are not asking for blind faith. We are asking to be held to account against clear milestones, and that is exactly what we intend to do,” the Minister stated.

The Ministry further disclosed that regular progress reports on the grid stabilisation programme would be provided as part of a coordinated communication strategy designed to keep citizens, investors and other stakeholders informed about implementation milestones.

The Federal Government maintained that the renewed investment in transmission infrastructure is expected to lay the foundation for a more reliable, resilient and efficient electricity system capable of supporting Nigeria’s economic growth and long-term energy security.
