Gombe-Biu Super Highway: Inuwa Yahaya Pushes for Speedy Construction as Umahi Declares Project Tinubu’s Priority

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has intensified efforts to secure accelerated Federal Government action on major road projects in the state, particularly the Gombe-Biu axis of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Super Highway, as Works Minister Senator David Umahi described the corridor as a priority project of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The development followed a meeting between Governor Yahaya and Umahi in Abuja on Monday, where the Gombe governor renewed his call for sustained federal intervention in strategic road infrastructure considered critical to the state’s economic transformation and regional integration.
The meeting was disclosed in a statement issued on August 10, 2026, on the governor’s engagement with the Works Minister.
The governor’s latest push is centred on securing full-scale construction and timely completion of the Gombe-Biu corridor following the Federal Government’s recent approval and flag-off of the massive Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Super Highway.
Inuwa Yahaya seeks sustained momentum
Governor Yahaya has consistently advocated the early commencement of the Gombe-Biu axis, citing its strategic importance to Gombe and the wider North-East.
His advocacy has included engagements with the Ministry of Works and other relevant Federal Government authorities, culminating in Umahi’s recent visit to Gombe, where the Minister joined the governor and members of the National Assembly at the groundbreaking ceremony for the project.
With the groundbreaking completed, Yahaya is now seeking sustained momentum towards actual construction and timely delivery.
A major component of his proposal is the development of Northern and Southern bypasses for Gombe metropolis, which would open up the state capital from both ends, connect strategically with the Gombe-Biu corridor, reduce pressure on existing roads and facilitate the movement of people and goods.
Umahi: Gombe-Biu is Tinubu’s priority
Responding to the governor’s request, Umahi described the Gombe-Biu axis as a priority of the Tinubu administration and assured Yahaya that his proposal concerning the commencement point would be considered as construction gathers momentum.
The Minister also expressed confidence in Hitech Construction Company, the contractor handling the project, describing the firm as one of the country’s most competent contractors for major infrastructure projects.
Umahi further commended Governor Yahaya for his persistence and commitment to securing development projects for the people of Gombe.
Reflecting on his recent visit to the state, the Minister said the trip gave him a deeper appreciation of the scale of development taking place under the Yahaya administration.
“Since my visit to Gombe, I have become like your ambassador, anywhere I go I talk about your state and the developmental strides I have witnessed. I tell people, when you want to see genuine development and visionary leadership, go to Gombe.”
Minister assures Gombe of Federal support
Umahi assured the governor that the Federal Government would deliver the project, expressing confidence that its completion would generate significant economic benefits for Gombe and further demonstrate the impact of President Tinubu’s infrastructure agenda.
He also acknowledged Yahaya’s continued advocacy for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of other strategic highways serving the North-East.
These include the Gombe–Bajoga–Potiskum, Gombe–Dukku–Darazo and Gombe–Bauchi corridors, which the governor has identified as critical to the state’s economic connectivity.
For Gombe State, the roads are regarded as major economic arteries linking farmers to markets, communities to commercial centres and the state to neighbouring economic hubs.
The planned infrastructure expansion is also expected to strengthen regional integration, facilitate agricultural and commercial activities, improve mobility and open up new opportunities for investment across Gombe and the wider North-East.
