Mambilla: APC Campaign Council Accuses Atiku of Compromising National Interest, Demands Withdrawal From 2027 Race

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has made some serious allegations against Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Claims he compromised Nigeria’s national interest in connection with the controversial Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project and are urging him to step back from the 2027 presidential race.
The statement comes on the heels of revelations from the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) arbitration tribunal in Paris, which is looking into the long-standing dispute involving Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited, its promoter Leno Adesanya, and the Nigerian government regarding the Mambilla project.
The APC’s stance was articulated in a statement released in Abuja on Friday, September 18, 2026, and was signed by Dele Alake, the spokesperson for the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
A key point of contention is a $500,000 payment made by Adesanya to Jennifer Douglas, who was Atiku’s wife at the time, back in January 2003. This payment according to source was funneled through China Castle Investments Limited, an offshore company linked to Adesanya, and it has become a focal point in the arbitration discussions surrounding the Mambilla project.
The APC council argues that the circumstances of this payment, along with the subsequent awarding of a build-operate-transfer contract to Sunrise, raise significant questions about Atiku’s involvement in the project.
They allege that Atiku and former Minister of Power, Olu Agunloye, collaborated to push through the contract despite objections from then-President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Federal Executive Council.
Moreover, they claim that the payment to Jennifer Douglas is tied to the eventual contract award, labeling it as evidence of a compromise of Nigeria’s interests.
The ICC tribunal has scrutinized the $500,000 payment and the explanations provided surrounding it.
