A fire outbreak at the Kugbo Furniture Market in Abuja on Friday affected 21 shops and one vehicle, with no casualty recorded, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.

The development was contained in a statement issued by the NEMA Abuja Operations Office (AOO) Press Unit on October 2, 2026, following the agency’s emergency response to the incident.

According to NEMA, its Emergency Response and Ambulance Bay (ERAB) received a distress call about the fire at approximately 11:15 a.m., prompting the immediate activation of relevant emergency response stakeholders, including the Federal Fire Service and other responders.

NEMA responders subsequently arrived at the scene and supported crowd-control operations while firefighters worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the market.

The agency said the fire was successfully dampened after the main blaze was brought under control, reducing the risk of secondary outbreaks.

“The fire was successfully dampened to prevent possible secondary outbreaks and further spread,” NEMA said.

Although no lives were lost in the incident, a preliminary assessment by emergency responders showed that 21 shops and one vehicle were affected by the fire.

NEMA said some valuable items were also successfully recovered from the affected shops during the emergency operation.

Emergency response activities at the scene were concluded at about 1:40 p.m., after responders completed efforts to contain the situation and minimise further damage.
