The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has commended Nigerians living abroad for their growing economic contributions to the country, disclosing that monthly remittance inflows are approaching $1 billion, alongside rising diaspora investments in key sectors of the economy.

The Commission made this known in a press release issued in Abuja on October 20, 2026, and signed electronically by its Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

NiDCOM attributed the growing inflows and investments to the continued commitment of Nigerians abroad to national development, as well as what it described as increasing confidence in the country’s ongoing economic reforms.

The Commission acknowledged that the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange market under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were difficult but necessary measures to address longstanding economic distortions.

It noted that although the economic adjustment period had been challenging, Nigeria’s external reserves, which it said were approaching $60 billion, and rising remittance inflows represented encouraging developments.

Beyond financial transfers to families, the Commission highlighted the growing involvement of Nigerians in the Diaspora in domestic investments, particularly in healthcare, agriculture, food processing and information and communication technology.

According to NiDCOM, these investments help sustain businesses, create employment opportunities and introduce valuable skills, expertise and innovation into the Nigerian economy.

The Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended Nigerians abroad for continuing to support their families and invest in their homeland despite the economic challenges of recent years.

She urged them to sustain the contributions, noting that diaspora remittances and investments were helping households meet their needs, keeping businesses operational and expanding opportunities for Nigerians.

To attract more diaspora capital, the Commission said it was strengthening engagement through initiatives such as the annual National Diaspora Day celebrations and the Nigerian Diaspora Investment Summit.

It also highlighted the recently held Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference (NIDEC) in Canada, which brought Nigerians together to explore investment opportunities, establish business relationships and discuss ways to channel more diaspora resources into national economic growth.

NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to improve engagement with Nigerians abroad and create a more supportive environment for investment.

The Commission expressed optimism that sustained reforms and greater private-sector participation would encourage more Nigerians in the Diaspora to bring their ideas, expertise and financial resources into the country, thereby supporting long-term economic growth.
