The race for the 2027 governorship of Adamawa State is gathering momentum as Senator Abbas Aminu Iya formally pick nomination form, underscoring inclusive governance and equitable power rotation.
The lawmaker, who represents Adamawa Central in the 10th Senate, picked up his nomination form amid rising political interest across the state, signaling what could evolve into a keenly contested election cycle.
Addressing journalists shortly after picking the form, Iya said his decision was driven by a deep understanding of the needs of the people.
“I know what my people want—that is why I am contesting for this position,” he said. “I have the experience and knowledge needed to move Adamawa State forward.”
A central pillar of his campaign is the question of zoning, with the senator arguing that the central zone has been historically excluded from producing a governor.
“I am from the central zone, and we have never produced a governor. I believe this is the right time,” he stated.
He also called for peaceful political engagement, urging residents to remain law-abiding while expressing confidence in his party’s internal processes.
“I call on the people of Adamawa State to be peaceful and law-abiding. With the direct primary, I believe we will win,” he added.
Iya enters the race with a blend of legislative and administrative experience. Prior to his election to the Senate, he served as Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, playing a key role in state-level governance.
At the National Assembly, he currently chairs the Senate Committee on Science and Technology, where his legislative focus has included innovation, education, and digital advancement. Within his constituency, he has executed projects spanning road construction, rural electrification, agriculture, and community security support.
Notable interventions include the construction of roads in Uba township and Yola South, installation of solar-powered streetlights across the seven local government areas in Adamawa Central, and provision of transformers and agricultural inputs to communities.
On the legislative front, he has sponsored multiple bills covering healthcare, ICT development, environmental management, and flood mitigation, including a proposal for the establishment of a National Eye Care Centre in Jimeta.
Political observers say his entry adds weight to the emerging contest, with his grassroots reach and governance experience likely to shape early alignments ahead of the polls.
As political activities intensify, stakeholders across Adamawa will be watching closely to see how issues of equity, development, and unity influence voter sentiment in the lead-up to 2027.
